Ephemeral OS disk

An OS disk stored on the VM’s local/cache storage — free of managed-disk cost, but wiped on deallocate.

An ephemeral OS disk lives on the VM’s local temp/cache storage instead of a managed disk. That means no managed-disk storage charge and lower latency, at the cost of durability: the disk is lost if the VM is deallocated, redeployed, or reimaged.

It fits stateless, quickly rebuilt VMs (scale-set nodes, stateless services). It does not change the compute price this explorer shows, but it is a common way to cut the disk portion of a VM’s total cost.
